CONTEUDO:

Google has officially introduced a mechanism allowing publishers in the United Kingdom to exclude their content from the company’s generative AI search features. This compliance follows new legal guardrails established by British regulators to address the growing influence of AI in online information retrieval.

Publishers will be able to opt out of AI Search, thanks to new regulation

New Controls for Website Owners

The tech giant confirmed that website owners can now manage their presence in generative AI tools through a new toggle within Search Console. By enabling this option, publishers can prevent their pages from appearing in specific AI-driven features, including:

  • AI Overviews
  • AI Mode
  • AI Overviews within Google Discover

Google is rolling out this feature initially to a select group of U.K.-based publishers, with plans for a global expansion to follow. Despite these changes, the company clarified that opting out of AI-generated content will not negatively impact a site’s ranking in traditional search results.

Regulatory Pressure from the CMA

The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) described the mandate as a “world first.” The regulator views the move as a vital step in restoring balance between tech giants and content creators. By regaining control over how their material is utilized, news organizations may be better positioned to negotiate content licensing agreements.

The regulatory groundwork was laid last October when the CMA designated Google as having “strategic market status.” This was followed by a January directive pushing for more transparency regarding how content is aggregated for AI search and training models.

Data and Attribution Requirements

In addition to the opt-out capability, Google is required to improve how it credits original sources. The company stated it has increased the frequency of inline links and added website previews to its AI responses to drive traffic directly to publishers.

To encourage publishers to remain in the ecosystem, Google is introducing new analytics within Search Console. These tools will provide specific metrics on how often and where a site’s content appears within AI responses, offering insights into the traffic potential of these new search formats.

While the company highlights that its AI Overviews currently serve over 2.5 billion monthly active users, with AI Mode exceeding one billion, these new controls ensure that the decision to participate remains in the hands of the publishers themselves.
