Airbuds Raises $5M to Scale Its Social Music Network

Airbuds, the San Francisco-based social app that has gained significant traction among Gen Z, announced on Wednesday that it has secured $5 million in new funding. The investment round was led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm established by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

The startup has carved out a unique niche by allowing users to share their real-time listening habits through smartphone widgets. While tech giants like Apple and Spotify have repeatedly attempted to integrate social layers into their platforms—often with limited success—Airbuds has managed to build an organic community by focusing on effortless connectivity.

Growth and User Engagement

To date, the app has surpassed 15 million downloads, boasting 5 million monthly active users. Data from app intelligence firm Appfigures indicates that 1.5 million users engage with the platform daily, maintaining a 96% positive sentiment rating over the past month.

Co-founders Gilles Poupardin and Gawen Arab developed the app to solve a specific pain point: the friction involved in traditional music sharing. By utilizing iOS widgets, Airbuds automates the process. “You just connect your Spotify, and then every time you’re going to listen to something on Spotify, it’s going to be shared on Airbuds in real time,” Poupardin explained.

Beyond the Widget

While the widget is the core experience, the app has evolved to include several social features:

  • Interactive Reactions: Users can respond to tracks with emojis, stickers, or custom-clipped selfies.
  • Built-in Messenger: Direct chat functionality allows for immediate discussion of shared songs.
  • Ghost Mode: Privacy controls for users who prefer to stream without broadcasting their activity.
  • Personalized Recaps: Similar to Spotify Wrapped, the app provides periodic insights into listening habits.
  • Custom Spaces: Profiles that can be manually or automatically curated with favorites, lyrics, and images.

Currently, Airbuds supports integrations with Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Musi, Deezer, Amazon Music, and Audiomack. The platform is primarily popular among U.S. students, though it maintains a presence in the U.K., Australia, Brazil, and Mexico.

Strategic Outlook

The company has raised a total of $10 million to date, with previous backing from investors including a16z, SV Angel, Dream Machine, and others. With this latest infusion of capital, the team is exploring subscription models, expanded service support, and features aimed at broader demographics.

For now, the platform remains focused on its core mission: bridging identity and self-expression through music. As Poupardin noted, while streaming services provide access to millions of songs, the social identity aspect remains the “missing piece” that Airbuds is aiming to solve.
