Google Discover Update Lets Users Follow Favorite Creators

Creators, Social Media

CONTEUDO:

Google is rolling out a significant update to its Discover feed within the flagship Search app, introducing a “follow” mechanism designed to grant users greater influence over the content they encounter. The change aims to prioritize material from specific publishers and creators selected directly by the audience.

Google revamps Discover page to show content from creators

The feature functions through a simple interface: when users encounter content from a desired source, they can tap the name to access a dedicated page displaying that creator’s full history. From there, an option to follow the source ensures that future updates from that entity appear more frequently in the user’s Discover feed.

Expanding Content Diversity

Beyond traditional articles, the platform is broadening the scope of what appears in Discover. In the coming weeks, the feed will begin to aggregate a diverse range of media, including:

  • YouTube Shorts
  • Social media posts from X (formerly Twitter)
  • Content updates from Instagram
  • Web-based articles and blog posts

This integration follows a similar update introduced last month, which empowered users to curate specific news outlets and blogs for the “Top Stories” section of Google search results. While the company confirmed it plans to incorporate additional source types in the future, it has not yet disclosed the specific criteria used to determine which creator content qualifies for visibility on the Discover page.

Strategic Shift Amid Traffic Concerns

The update arrives as the publishing industry grapples with declining referral traffic linked to the rise of AI-driven search results. By allowing users to curate their feeds, Google is attempting to balance its automated discovery algorithms with more personalized user control.

This effort to deepen engagement with publishers complements other recent initiatives, such as the introduction of the “Offerwall” product. That tool was designed to provide publishers with alternative revenue streams beyond traditional advertising, signaling a broader focus by the search giant on maintaining its relationship with the content ecosystem.
