Amazon Prime Video adds AI-generated Video Recaps

Amazon is integrating generative AI into its Prime Video platform to assist subscribers in catching up on complex storylines. Starting Wednesday, the service is rolling out a beta feature called “Video Recaps,” designed to provide viewers with concise summaries between seasons of their favorite shows.

According to the company, the tool leverages generative AI to produce high-quality, cinematic-style recaps. These summaries feature synchronized narration, dialogue, and background music, aiming to offer a polished viewing experience rather than a simple text-based overview.

Rollout and Previous AI Initiatives

The beta phase begins with a limited selection of Prime Originals. Initial titles confirmed for the feature include:

  • Fallout
  • Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan
  • Upload

This development builds upon the platform’s previous AI endeavors. Last year, Prime Video introduced “X-Ray Recaps,” a tool capable of summarizing individual episodes or entire seasons. At the time of that release, Amazon emphasized that the model included specific guardrails to prevent the inadvertent disclosure of spoilers.

The Streaming Industry’s AI Push

Amazon is not the only player in the streaming space experimenting with AI to enhance viewer retention and engagement. Competitors are actively testing similar technologies:

  • YouTube TV: Uses a “Key Plays” feature to summarize sports highlights for viewers joining games late, a tool that earned the company a Technical Emmy Award.
  • Netflix: Has moved beyond summaries, incorporating generative AI into content production. Recent examples include visual effects for the series The Eternaut, de-aging characters in Happy Gilmore 2, and assisting with set design for Billionaires’ Bunker.

While industry leaders view these tools as a way to streamline production and improve user convenience, the broader integration of AI in entertainment remains a subject of intense debate. Concerns regarding labor impacts and the ethics of training models on copyrighted works continue to shadow the technological progress seen in these streaming platforms.
