AMD Launches New Ryzen and Radeon Chips at CES 2025

AMD arrived at CES 2025 in Las Vegas with an aggressive expansion of its hardware portfolio, introducing a wide range of new silicon spanning from high-performance desktop processors to specialized chips for handheld gaming devices and AI-ready laptops.

The company enters the year following a period of significant market growth. During Q3 2024, AMD secured a 28.7% share of the desktop CPU market—a 9.6 percentage point increase over the previous year—while its mobile chip market share climbed to 22.3%, up 2.8 points.

High-Performance Computing

Headlining the desktop segment is the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Designed for creators and gamers, the 16-core processor utilizes the Zen 5 architecture with clock speeds reaching 5.7GHz. Internal benchmarks indicate an average performance gain of 8% in titles like Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy compared to the previous 7950X3D model.

For mobile users, the company introduced the “Fire Range” series, targeting ultraportable and midrange laptops. Launching in the first half of 2025, these chips—including the 9955HX and 9955HX3D—feature 12 to 16 cores and are designed for efficiency, drawing approximately 54W of power.

Advancing the AI PC

AMD is doubling down on AI-accelerated computing with new additions to the Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI Max series. These processors include a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to handle tasks such as local language model processing and Windows 11 AI image editing.

The Ryzen AI Max series serves as the flagship, offering up to 16 cores and integrated graphics, aimed at high-performance rendering and AI workloads. For more budget-conscious consumers, the new Ryzen 200 series will also integrate NPUs into mainstream devices starting in Q2 2025.

Gaming Handhelds

AMD continues to support the growing handheld PC market with the new Ryzen Z2 series. The lineup includes:

• Ryzen Z2 Go: 4 cores (up to 4.3GHz) and 12 graphics cores.
• Ryzen Z2 Extreme: 8 cores (up to 5.0GHz) and 16 graphics cores.
• Ryzen Z2: 8 cores (up to 5.1GHz) and 12 graphics cores.

Radeon GPUs and Software

AMD also unveiled the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 graphics cards. Built on the 4nm RDNA 4 architecture, these GPUs promise improved ray tracing and media encoding. Complementing the hardware is the new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.0, which utilizes AI to upscale content to 4K resolution.

Furthermore, the AMD Adrenalin software suite has been updated with new AI capabilities, including local image generation, PDF summarization via language models, and an AI-powered chatbot for technical support.
