Apple Adds New Monthly Subscription Model With 12-Month Term
Apple has unveiled a new subscription framework for the App Store, enabling developers to offer customers monthly billing cycles tied to a yearlong service commitment. The initiative, announced by the company on Monday, creates a middle ground between short-term flexibility and long-term revenue predictability.
By formalizing this structure, Apple is effectively standardizing a marketing strategy many developers already employ: highlighting the cost savings of an annual commitment against a monthly price point. This approach aims to incentivize users who might otherwise hesitate at a large upfront payment, while providing developers with a clearer view of their long-term subscriber base.

Regional Exclusions and Implementation
Despite the global rollout, the feature will not be available in the United States or Singapore at launch. While Apple has not provided a specific reason for these exclusions, legal considerations are likely at play. In the U.S., the company remains involved in ongoing litigation following the Epic Games ruling regarding subscription billing practices. Singapore, meanwhile, maintains a complex regulatory environment for digital payments that may require further review.
User Controls and Transparency
To ensure customers are not misled by these long-term commitments, Apple is implementing strict display policies for subscription offers. The company has integrated several features to manage these plans:
- Payment Tracking: Users can view the number of completed and remaining payments directly within their Apple Account.
- Renewal Alerts: Apple will issue reminder emails and, for users who opt in, push notifications ahead of renewal dates.
- Cancellation Terms: While users can cancel at any time, the monthly deduction will continue until the 12-month term is fulfilled.
This auto-renewal feature carries a risk for users who are not diligent, as a failure to cancel before the term ends could trigger an automatic renewal for another 12-month period.
Technical Availability
Developers can begin configuring these subscription plans via App Store Connect and testing them in Xcode immediately. The feature will be supported for customers running iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4, with broader compatibility arriving in the May updates for these operating systems.
