Apple Announces AirPods Max 2 With H2 Chip and Live Translation
Apple has officially introduced the AirPods Max 2, marking a significant hardware update to the premium over-ear headphones first released in 2020. The new model integrates the company’s proprietary H2 chip, enabling advanced computational audio capabilities and improved performance across the board.
Priced at $549, the headphones will be available for preorder beginning March 25. Apple confirmed that the rollout will span more than 30 countries and regions, with units expected to reach customers early next month.
Enhanced Audio and Noise Control
The transition to the H2 chip brings significant upgrades to the listening experience. Apple claims the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation. To complement this, the new Adaptive Audio feature dynamically adjusts ANC and Transparency levels based on the user’s environment.
Transparency mode has also been refined with a new digital signal-processing algorithm. The company notes that this adjustment makes ambient awareness feel more natural. Furthermore, the headphones introduce several key audio improvements:
- High-Dynamic-Range Amplifier: Designed for cleaner audio output.
- Spatial Audio: Features improved instrument localization, enhanced bass response, and clearer mid and high frequencies.
- Lossless Support: Capable of 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback when connected via the included USB-C cable.
- Loud Sound Reduction: Protects hearing from harsh environmental noise without compromising the audio profile.
New Functionality and Design
Beyond sound quality, the AirPods Max 2 include specialized tools for communication and content creation. The headphones now support Live Translation for real-time, in-person language assistance. For phone calls, a new voice isolation feature utilizes the microphone array and computational audio to prioritize the user’s voice while suppressing background noise.
Creators—including podcasters and vocalists—can leverage the improved microphone array for more natural vocal textures. Additionally, the device gains a Camera Remote function, allowing users to press the Digital Crown to trigger the camera shutter on a paired iPhone or iPad, or to start and stop video recordings.
The updated lineup will be available in five distinct colorways: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
