Apple Expands Age-Verification Tools to Meet Global Laws

Apple is deploying a new suite of age-verification tools across its global App Store ecosystem, responding to a tightening regulatory landscape regarding child digital safety. The initiative, announced to developers this Tuesday, introduces technical measures to ensure compliance with emerging age-restriction mandates in both the U.S. and international markets.

A central component of this rollout is the updated Declared Age Range API, which is currently entering beta testing. This tool enables developers to verify if a user falls within a specific age demographic without requiring access to sensitive personal data, such as an exact date of birth.

Stricter Access in Key Markets

Effective immediately, the company is implementing automated age-confirmation barriers in three specific countries:

• Brazil: Downloads of apps rated 18+ will be blocked until the user successfully verifies their adult status. Additionally, games featuring “loot boxes”—mechanisms involving random rewards often likened to gambling—will see their age ratings adjusted to 18+ to restrict access for minors.
• Australia and Singapore: Users in these regions will face similar restrictions, with the App Store automatically requiring age confirmation before allowing the download of 18+ rated software.

Regulatory Compliance in the U.S.

Within the United States, Apple is focusing on state-level mandates. New users residing in Utah and Louisiana will see their age categories shared with apps via the Declared Age Range API. This aligns with the company’s broader strategy to adapt its permissions framework to meet localized legal obligations.

According to Apple’s communication to developers, the updated API now provides specific signals to software creators, including:

• Automated notifications regarding whether a user is subject to specific age-related regulatory requirements.
• Indicators revealing if a user is legally mandated to share their age range.
• Alerts for developers requiring parental or guardian consent before pushing significant updates to apps used by minors.

A History of Adaptive Policy

These developments follow previous efforts by Apple to align its platform with regional statutes. Last October, the company began adjusting its systems to comply with age-assurance requirements in Texas, though those plans were partially suspended in December amid ongoing legal challenges to the state’s legislation. Last year, Apple also refined its age-rating system, introducing more granular categories and expanding the questionnaire process for developers during the app submission review.
