Discord Delays Global Age Verification to 2026

Discord has officially postponed its global age verification rollout, pushing the implementation date to the second half of 2026. The shift follows a wave of criticism from the platform’s community, which voiced significant concerns regarding privacy and the potential requirement for identity documentation.

Revised Approach to User Verification

In a blog post published Tuesday, Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy acknowledged that the initial announcement was poorly communicated, leading many users to mistakenly believe the platform would mandate face scans or ID uploads for everyone. The company now clarifies that approximately 90% of its user base will not need to undergo formal verification.

Discord’s internal safety systems are designed to identify adult users through existing account signals, such as:

• The duration of the account’s existence.
• Whether a payment method is linked to the profile.
• The specific types of servers the user frequents.

For the estimated 10% of users who may eventually require verification, Discord plans to expand its methods beyond facial estimation or ID submission, including the future option to verify via credit card.

Addressing Privacy and Vendor Concerns

The company is also refining its relationship with third-party vendors. Moving forward, Discord states it will only collaborate with partners that process age verification directly on the user’s device. Additionally, the platform intends to provide greater transparency by detailing the data practices of every vendor used.

This pivot follows scrutiny regarding the company’s previous partnerships. Discord faced criticism for its association with Persona, a vendor linked to investors involved in government surveillance and immigration enforcement technologies. Furthermore, the company is attempting to rebuild trust following a security incident last October, in which a third-party vendor breach potentially exposed sensitive data—including government ID photos—of approximately 70,000 users. Discord has since terminated its relationship with that specific vendor.

Maintaining the User Experience

Vishnevskiy emphasized that for those who choose not to verify their age, the core Discord experience remains unchanged. Users will retain full access to their servers, friend lists, direct messages, and voice chats.

“The only thing that changes is you won’t be able to access age-restricted content or change certain default safety settings designed to protect teens,” Vishnevskiy noted. Regarding the company’s communication failures, he added: “In hindsight, we should have provided more detail about our intentions and how the process works.”
