Apple sets November 2026 deadline for Patreon subscriptions

Apple tells Patreon to move creators to in-app purchase for subscriptions by November

Patreon is pushing back against a new mandate from Apple requiring the platform to transition all creators to its in-app subscription billing system. The tech giant has set a final compliance deadline of November 1, 2026, forcing a change that Patreon argues undermines the stability necessary for creator-led businesses.

Policy shifts create uncertainty

While the mandate currently affects only the 4% of creators still utilizing Patreon’s legacy billing models, the platform contends that Apple’s fluctuating requirements have created significant operational friction. This latest directive follows a series of policy reversals from Apple over the past 18 months, which Patreon claims prevents creators from establishing long-term financial strategies.

The conflict centers on how subscriptions are processed. Apple previously signaled that Patreon risked removal from the App Store if it continued to manage billing internally, viewing the practice as an attempt to bypass the standard App Store commission structure. Although Apple originally pushed for an earlier transition, the timeline became blurred following legal developments.

Following the U.S. court ruling in Epic v. Apple last May, Patreon enabled creators to process web payments directly via links in its app. At that time, the platform informed creators that the previously discussed November 2025 deadline was no longer active, a move that Patreon now acknowledges may have contributed to user confusion.

Patreon’s response to the mandate

Despite complying with the new terms, Patreon has expressed clear frustration regarding Apple’s influence over its business model. In a public statement, the company noted that it had repeatedly proposed alternative tools to Apple that would have allowed for a more gradual, creator-led migration, but those suggestions were consistently rejected.

“We strongly disagree with this decision,” Patreon stated. “Creators need consistency and clarity in order to build healthy, long-term businesses. Instead, creators using legacy billing will now have to endure the whiplash of another policy reversal.”

Supporting the transition

To assist those affected by the upcoming 2026 deadline, Patreon has introduced a suite of management resources available on its support website. The platform is focusing on providing flexibility during the migration, including:

Patreon also plans to launch an option for annual-only memberships prior to the November 2026 cutoff, aiming to mitigate the impact of the transition for the remaining legacy users.
