Audible Launches $8.99 Standard Plan to Challenge Spotify

Audible, the Amazon-owned audiobook giant, is introducing a new “Standard” subscription tier priced at $8.99 per month. This move marks a strategic shift to capture a broader audience, positioning the service at a $6 discount compared to its established $14.95 “Premium” offering.

Audible launches a cheaper ‘Standard’ subscription plan, challenging Spotify

The new membership tier provides users with one audiobook credit each month from the service’s extensive catalog. Additionally, members gain unlimited access to a rotating selection of Audible Originals and a curated library. Notably, the Standard plan also incorporates access to nearly 200 popular titles from Wondery+, as that standalone app prepares to cease operations in the coming months.

Key Differences Between Subscription Tiers

  • Content Ownership: Unlike the Premium plan, which allows users to retain their audiobooks even after canceling, the Standard plan revokes access to consumed titles once the subscription ends.
  • Market Availability: The rollout covers the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and France, with further international testing currently underway.

Strategic Response to Market Competition

The debut of this lower-cost option arrives as Audible contends with intensifying rivalry from Spotify. Since entering the audiobook space in 2022, Spotify has aggressively bundled the format with its music and podcast services. Internal data from Spotify suggests that over half of its 281 million premium subscribers have interacted with audiobooks, with recent engagement metrics showing a 36% increase in listeners over the past year.

Cynthia Chu, chief financial and growth officer at Audible, stated that the expansion aims to provide “maximum access for lighter listeners” while simultaneously helping creators and publishers connect with wider audiences.

Early performance metrics from trials in the UK and Australia were promising, with the company reporting double-digit growth in new subscriber sign-ups. By launching the Standard plan, Audible expects to secure millions of additional customers, potentially capitalizing on the momentum created by Spotify’s recent series of price hikes.
