Cards Against Humanity Sues SpaceX for $15M Over Land Trespass
Cards Against Humanity has initiated legal action against SpaceX, seeking $15 million in damages. The game company alleges that Elon Musk’s aerospace firm trespassed on its private land in Texas, using the site as a staging area for construction equipment and debris.
A Dispute Over Border Property
The land in question was purchased seven years ago through a campaign titled “Cards Against Humanity Saves America.” Approximately 150,000 donors contributed $15 each to acquire the plot near the U.S.-Mexico border, specifically to prevent the construction of a border wall proposed by former President Donald Trump.
According to a formal complaint filed Thursday in the Cameron County District Court, the property had been maintained in its original, meadow-like condition. The lawsuit contrasts historical photos of the site with current imagery, which displays excavated earth, industrial piping, and various construction machinery.
Allegations of Unauthorized Use
The filing claims that SpaceX occupied the site for at least six months without authorization. The game company asserts that SpaceX cleared vegetation and laid gravel, effectively transforming the private meadow into an industrial workspace.
When the encroachment was discovered, Cards Against Humanity claims they confronted the space company regarding the property violation. The lawsuit alleges that SpaceX responded by issuing a 12-hour ultimatum, offering a “lowball” purchase price for half of the land’s value. In an email sent to original campaign donors, the company stated, “We said, ‘Go f— yourself, Elon Musk. We’ll see you in court.’”
Potential Payouts for Donors
The legal team behind Cards Against Humanity has outlined plans for the potential settlement. If the company succeeds in its $15 million claim, it intends to distribute the net proceeds among the 150,000 original donors, estimating a return of roughly $100 per person.
However, the company remains realistic about the legal battle ahead. In the correspondence to supporters, they noted that given Musk’s extensive financial and legal resources, the final payout to individual donors might be significantly lower—potentially as little as $2.
The company has launched a dedicated website, www.ElonOwesYou100Dollars.com, to track the proceedings. As of the filing date, neither SpaceX nor Cards Against Humanity had provided further comment beyond the initial court documents and donor communications.
