Cash App launches $25 magic wand for contactless payments
Cash App is officially bringing a viral social media trend into the physical world with the launch of its new “magic wand.” Starting Thursday, users can purchase the $25 accessory, which functions as an NFC-powered payment device designed to make contactless transactions more whimsical and convenient.

The gadget, which mimics the DIY wands seen on social platforms, is linked directly to a user’s Cash App Card. It operates at any retail location that accepts Visa’s tap-to-pay technology. To begin using the device, customers simply link the hardware to their existing account through the app; notably, the system requires no minimum balance to process payments.
Designing for a new payment experience
The wand is equipped with a keychain ring, allowing it to be clipped onto clothing or bags. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the company suggests the tool is particularly useful in environments where retrieving a smartphone is inconvenient, such as crowded concerts or sports venues.

Thomas Templeton, Hardware lead at Block, noted that the product aims to shift the perception of digital transactions. “While digital wallets are invisible and physical cards are often buried in wallets, Cash App Tags are just the opposite. We see a unique opportunity here to make payments visible and social for the first time,” Templeton stated.
Security and future expansion
Despite the playful design, the device includes robust management features accessible via the app:
- Real-time spend notifications for every transaction.
- The ability to lock or unlock the tag instantly.
- Remote deactivation if the wand is misplaced.
- Integrated fraud monitoring specifically for tag-based payments.
This rollout is a strategic play to capture the Gen Z demographic, building on the company’s previous efforts to attract younger users, such as the introduction of teen accounts in 2021 and a debit card for children aged six to 12.
Cash App intends to expand its “Tag” hardware lineup in the coming months. The company plans to release several limited-edition designs before transitioning to a permanent selection of hardware options later this summer.
