Claude 3.7 Sonnet Proves Its Reasoning Power in Pokémon Red

Anthropic has turned to a classic Game Boy title to demonstrate the capabilities of its latest artificial intelligence model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. By tasking the AI with navigating the world of Pokémon Red, the company highlighted how its newest release utilizes “extended thinking” to solve complex, multi-step problems.

Unlike previous iterations, such as Claude 3.0 Sonnet—which struggled to even exit the protagonist’s house in Pallet Town—the 3.7 model successfully progressed through the game. The AI managed to defeat three gym leaders and secure their respective badges, a feat that required significant strategic navigation.

How the AI Navigated the Game

To achieve these results, Anthropic provided the model with specific tools to interact with the game environment:

  • Basic memory retention to track progress.
  • Screen pixel input to interpret visual data.
  • Function calls to simulate button presses and character movement.

The “extended thinking” capability mirrors similar reasoning features found in models like OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek’s R1. By dedicating more computing power and time to process each decision, the model can navigate complex game logic more effectively. Anthropic reported that the AI performed 35,000 individual actions to reach the third gym leader, Lt. Surge.

Gaming as a Benchmark

While Pokémon Red serves primarily as an unconventional “toy” benchmark, the use of interactive media to test AI performance is a growing trend. Developers are increasingly utilizing video games to evaluate how models handle real-time decision-making, with recent projects testing AI capabilities in titles ranging from Street Fighter to Pictionary.

According to Anthropic, the ability to reason through gaming environments provides a clear metric for how models handle extended, sequential tasks. As AI continues to evolve, developers are likely to find even more creative ways to push these systems to their limits.
