Coinbase Launches AI Agents for Automated Crypto Trading

Coinbase’s new tool can help agents trade and pay for premium research

Coinbase has unveiled a new suite of AI agents designed to handle financial transactions, including executing crypto trades and purchasing premium research data. The move positions the exchange to capture a growing market where automated agents are increasingly performing tasks previously reserved for human users.

The rollout follows a broader industry trend toward agentic commerce, with Coinbase positioning itself as a unique player by merging exchange infrastructure with native payment protocols. Users can now link these agents to their primary Coinbase accounts or opt for a segregated sandbox environment to test functionality without full account exposure.

Advanced Capabilities and Integration

The new agents leverage Coinbase Advanced, granting them access to professional-grade tools such as TradingView charts. This integration allows the technology to:

  • Execute automated trades based on specific investment theses.
  • Perform portfolio rebalancing.
  • Provide real-time advice on individual cryptocurrency transactions.

Currently, the agents are limited to spot markets and derivatives, though the company plans to expand support to prediction markets and equities. Furthermore, users will soon gain granular control over agent behavior, including setting custom limits on trade sizes, permissible service interactions, and total spending caps.

Leveraging the x402 Payment Protocol

A key differentiator for Coinbase is the use of the open x402 payment protocol. Developed in partnership with firms like AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near, this standard allows agents to pay for premium data APIs and on-demand compute resources autonomously, eliminating the need for traditional subscriptions or manual logins.

Lincoln Murr, Head of AI Product at Coinbase, highlighted the strategic intent behind this development. “Coinbase for Agents is informed by insights gleaned from years of building the agentic economy, and the primary goal is to create agents that can transact,” Murr stated. “Unlike pure trading platforms, we’re the only one that combines exchange access with a native payments protocol.”

Growing AI Ecosystem

Coinbase has been systematically building its AI-driven infrastructure for years. The company previously introduced AgentKit, which enables developers to integrate automated wallets into applications, and launched an AI-powered assistant for its main app last December. The latest agent tools are designed for cross-platform utility, capable of operating within ChatGPT or Claude via an MCP server.

The race to integrate agentic payments is heating up across the financial sector. Visa recently partnered with OpenAI and invested in Replit to advance similar capabilities. As these technologies evolve, global entities like the Financial Stability Board (FSB) have begun calling for rigorous safeguards to mitigate risks associated with AI in finance.
