Deezer Launches Remix Lab for Fan-Created Song Edits

Deezer has officially launched “Remix Lab,” a new in-app feature that enables listeners to create their own versions of tracks while ensuring original artists and rights holders retain control and receive royalties. The announcement, made this Wednesday, positions the platform in stark contrast to competitors currently leaning heavily into AI-generated content.

Deezer says its new feature lets fans remix songs with artist consent

Accessible directly through the pages of participating artists, the tool provides a suite of customization options. According to Pierre Trochu, head of product at Deezer, users can perform basic edits like tempo adjustments and reverb application, or engage in more complex transformations, including alterations to musical style and genre.

A Human-Centric Approach to Remixing

Unlike the AI-heavy strategies recently adopted by platforms like Spotify—which has partnered with Universal Music Group for AI-driven covers—and YouTube, Deezer is focusing on artist-sanctioned participation. This move arrives as concerns grow regarding whether automated AI music might eventually crowd out human creators in discovery algorithms.

Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier emphasized that the feature is designed to deepen the bond between fans and musicians. “True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of the artists, fully respecting rights, and maximizing earnings for each track,” Lanternier stated.

The platform has maintained a firm stance against the proliferation of artificial intelligence in its library. It currently employs detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks from other services and proactively removes them from its own editorial playlists and recommendations.

Availability and Future Expansion

Currently, the Remix Lab is live for users in France, featuring a roster of artists that includes Céline Dion, Alain Souchon, Alonzo, Ronisia, Mosimann, Tiakola, and Zaho. While global expansion details remain limited, the success of the pilot could challenge the industry-wide assumption that AI-generated content is the only viable path for the future of streaming.

Engagement and Rewards

To coincide with the launch, Deezer is hosting a series of contests through the Deezer Club:

  • Winners will be announced in early September.
  • Top remixes will earn a spot on a featured Deezer playlist.
  • Winners will receive two tickets to a “Deezer Purple Door” event.
  • Exclusive artist merchandise will be awarded to successful creators.

By ensuring that every stream of a fan-made remix results in direct compensation for the original artist, Deezer is establishing a potential blueprint for how streaming services can foster community creativity without infringing upon the intellectual property of the musicians they host.
