Discord Launches In-App Shop for Direct Game Purchases
Discord is rolling out a new suite of commerce tools that allows users to purchase digital items without exiting the application. This update, announced Tuesday, aims to streamline the gaming experience while opening fresh revenue channels for developers as the platform eyes a potential IPO.
By enabling direct transactions within its interface, the company is positioning itself as a more integrated hub for gaming communities. The move is designed to help developers expand their reach beyond their own proprietary storefronts, potentially increasing sales by tapping into Discord’s massive user base.
Partnership with Marvel Rivals
The feature debuts through a strategic partnership with Marvel Rivals. The title has seen significant momentum since its release last year, amassing over 10 million players in its first 72 hours and exceeding $100 million in revenue during its opening month. The game maintains a robust presence on Discord with a community exceeding 4 million members.
Within the official Marvel Rivals server, players can now access a dedicated shop page to browse various digital goods. The available inventory includes:
- Costumes and character skins
- In-game bundles
- Emotes and emojis
Social Gifting and Availability
Beyond direct purchasing, the platform is introducing social commerce features to encourage community engagement. Users can now curate wishlists that are visible to friends, simplifying the process of receiving gifts. Furthermore, items can be sent as gifts directly through direct messages (DMs), a feature that allows users to send presents even if the recipient does not play the specific title.
Currently, the new commerce experience is subject to specific limitations:
- Platform: Available exclusively on the desktop application.
- Currency: Transactions are processed in U.S. dollars.
- Regions: Limited to the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Oceania.
While the initial rollout is restricted to these regions, the company has indicated that it is evaluating the feasibility of expanding support to additional territories in the future.
