Echo Chess raises $1.4M to build the ‘Wordle of Chess’

The daily puzzle gaming market, which surged in popularity following the acquisition of Wordle by The New York Times, has a new contender aiming to capture the chess community. Echo Chunk, the studio behind the browser-based game Echo Chess, has officially closed a $1.4 million funding round.

The investment features participation from a16z’s early-stage games accelerator alongside several angel investors within the gaming sector. The startup plans to deploy this fresh capital primarily to scale its puzzle production through the integration of artificial intelligence.

Reimagining Chess for Daily Play

Unlike traditional chess games or word-based puzzles, Echo Chess functions as a daily challenge where the objective is to capture every piece on the board. The platform is positioning itself as a strategic alternative for players who enjoy the routine of mobile-first, bite-sized gaming experiences.

The company’s growth strategy centers on two key areas:

  • AI Integration: Utilizing machine learning to automate the generation of fresh, challenging daily puzzles.
  • Community Engagement: Leveraging the established demand for daily mobile games that has persisted since the Wordle boom two and a half years ago.

While industry giants like The New York Times have successfully monetized the crossword and daily puzzle habit, Echo Chunk is betting that the same behavioral patterns apply to the chess world. By lowering the barrier to entry for what they describe as “aspiring grandmasters,” the team hopes to replicate the viral success of daily logic games within the niche but highly engaged chess community.
