CONTEUDO:
Echo Chunk, the studio behind the daily chess puzzle game Echo Chess, has secured $1.4 million in pre-seed funding. The round was led by a16z Speedrun, Andreessen Horowitz’s early-stage gaming accelerator, with participation from notable industry figures including Zynga founder Mark Pincus, Opendoor CEO Eric Wu, South Park Commons, and Roblox’s head of generative AI, Stef Corazza.
The startup, currently a four-person team, intends to utilize the capital to scale its platform, specifically by integrating artificial intelligence to empower players to generate their own chess puzzles. While Echo Chess is the company’s debut title, founder and CEO Sami Ramly confirmed that the studio plans to develop additional gaming titles in the future.
A Modern Take on Chess
Echo Chess aims to broaden the appeal of the classic strategy game by shifting the focus from traditional head-to-head matches to daily, bite-sized challenges. Players are tasked with capturing all pieces on the board to clear each level. The game features three distinct modes:
- Daily Classic: A standard puzzle challenge.
- Daily Epic: A more complex daily iteration.
- Blitz Mode: A time-sensitive challenge where capturing pieces adds precious seconds to the clock, allowing players to progress through a continuous stream of boards.

Ramly, who previously served as head of product at the VR startup Wevr, noted that the game has already gained traction among streamers and content creators, though he did not disclose specific user metrics.
Leveraging AI as a Co-pilot
The core of Echo Chunk’s strategy lies in using AI to streamline game design. According to Ramly, the goal is to use technology as a “creation co-pilot” rather than a replacement for human creativity. Currently, the company is testing its “Echo Maker” platform in alpha, which allows select users to construct their own boards and puzzles.
The company emphasizes that it does not use player data to train its models. Instead, it employs a combination of supervised and deep learning methods based on game states. “If you combine the magic of what we do best as humans, which is adding character and soul to games, then you can use AI as a feedback loop,” Ramly explained.
Industry Backing
Investors are betting on the startup’s ability to turn chess into a community-driven, infinite content engine. Josh Lu, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, praised the team for their rapid development and ability to cultivate a passionate community around a fresh concept that would have been difficult to execute just a few years ago.
Stef Corazza, head of Generative AI at Roblox, highlighted the potential for this model to scale. “Echo Chess is a great example for this with its infinite Blitz Mode, and I can see this same approach enhancing an endless variety of user-generated maps,” Corazza stated.
For now, Echo Chunk remains focused on keeping its web-based version free to play. While monetization is not the immediate priority, Ramly stated that any future revenue models will be designed to avoid compromising the user experience.
