Epic Games Lays Off 1,000 Staff Amid Fortnite Revenue Slump

Epic Games cuts 1,000 jobs, says Fortnite engagement is down

Epic Games announced a significant reduction in its workforce on Tuesday, confirming the layoff of 1,000 employees. The decision, detailed in a company blog post, comes as the company grapples with a decline in player engagement within its flagship title, Fortnite.

Financial Restructuring and Fortnite’s Performance

CEO Tim Sweeney addressed the staff in a memo, characterizing the layoffs as a necessary measure to stabilize the company’s financial footing. According to Sweeney, the business has been spending beyond its means since the downturn in Fortnite engagement began in 2025.

To address these fiscal challenges, Epic Games is implementing several cost-cutting initiatives:

  • The elimination of 1,000 staff positions.
  • A reduction of over $500 million in expenses related to marketing and contracting.
  • The closure of several open job roles across the organization.

The company recently signaled its financial strain when it increased the price of V-Bucks, the in-game currency for Fortnite. At the time, Epic noted that the operational costs required to maintain the game had risen substantially.

Addressing the Role of AI and Industry Headwinds

Sweeney explicitly stated that the job cuts were not a result of artificial intelligence replacing developer roles. However, he acknowledged that the broader tech industry is facing indirect challenges linked to AI, specifically noting that the global demand for chips and subsequent RAM shortages have created ripple effects that are influencing consumer spending habits.

Support for Affected Employees

As part of the severance package, impacted staff members are set to receive four months of pay. Those with longer tenures at the company will be eligible for additional compensation. Furthermore, Epic Games committed to maintaining healthcare coverage for its U.S.-based employees for a period of six months following their departure.
