Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs Debuts Marble, a Generative 3D Model

World Labs, the artificial intelligence startup co-founded by industry pioneer Fei-Fei Li, has officially entered the commercial market with its flagship generative product: Marble. The platform allows users to transform text prompts, panoramas, photos, videos, or 3D layouts into fully editable and downloadable 3D environments.

The release follows a two-month limited beta period and arrives just over a year after the company emerged from stealth mode with $230 million in capital. Unlike existing research-focused models or real-time generators that create imagery on-the-fly, Marble focuses on producing persistent 3D assets that can be exported as meshes, Gaussian splats, or video files.

Creative control and editing

A primary differentiator for Marble is its emphasis on user-driven editing. The platform includes an experimental tool called Chisel, which enables creators to define coarse spatial structures—such as walls or planes—before the AI fills in the aesthetic details. This approach separates the structural layout from the visual style, functioning similarly to the relationship between HTML and CSS in web development.

Co-founder Justin Johnson highlighted that the goal is to provide a “quick pathway to generate” content without relinquishing creative control to the machine. Key features of the platform include:

  • Input Flexibility: Users can upload multiple images or video clips to create digital twins of real-world spaces.
  • Scene Expansion: A feature that allows users to extend a generated world by adding detail to specific regions as they navigate.
  • Composer Mode: A tool designed to combine multiple distinct worlds into larger, expansive 3D environments.

Industry applications

World Labs is targeting the gaming, visual effects (VFX), and virtual reality (VR) sectors as primary use cases. While the gaming industry has shown some resistance to generative AI—citing concerns over job displacement and intellectual property—Johnson suggests that Marble is intended to function as an asset-generation tool for developers to drop into existing pipelines like Unreal Engine or Unity.

For VFX artists, the model offers an advantage over traditional AI video generators by providing 3D assets that allow for precise camera control and scene staging. Additionally, while not a primary focus, the environments are already compatible with headsets such as the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro.

Marble is currently offered via four tiers, ranging from a free version to a $95-per-month “Max” subscription that includes higher generation limits and commercial rights. According to Fei-Fei Li, the launch is a foundational step toward achieving “spatial intelligence,” with the potential to eventually influence fields as diverse as robotics, science, and medicine.
