Flappy Bird Creator Denies Involvement in Game Revival

Ten years after the sudden disappearance of the viral mobile sensation Flappy Bird, the game’s original creator, Dong Nguyen, has broken his silence to clarify his lack of involvement in its alleged comeback. His statement follows a recent announcement from a group identifying itself as the Flappy Bird Foundation, which claimed intentions to relaunch the title.

Flappy Bird’s creator disavows ‘official’ new version of the game

Early this morning, Nguyen took to social media to distance himself from the project. In a brief message, he explicitly stated that he has “nothing to do” with the purported revival and confirmed, “I did not sell anything.” Furthermore, Nguyen added a pointed remark regarding the technology landscape surrounding the new project, noting, “I also don’t support crypto.”

Legal Status and Trademark Ownership

The Flappy Bird Foundation has described itself as a team of fans aiming to reintroduce the game to modern audiences. According to the group, they acquired the necessary rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC. Reports indicate that Gametech Holdings successfully petitioned to terminate Nguyen’s original trademark for Flappy Bird several years ago, providing the legal pathway for this new entity to claim the brand.

Concerns Over Crypto Integration

While the Foundation’s official public relations materials have remained silent on blockchain integration, digital investigation suggests a different story. Researcher Varun Biniwale discovered hidden metadata on the Flappy Bird Foundation website referencing the game moving to the Solana blockchain and entering “Web 3.0.” It remains uncertain if these are active development plans or remnants of discarded ideas.

A Legacy of Withdrawal

The original iteration of Flappy Bird, known for its challenging side-scrolling mechanics and retro aesthetic, became a global phenomenon in 2013, dominating both iOS and Android app stores. However, the immense pressure of its success led Nguyen to remove the game from circulation in February 2014, famously stating at the time, “I cannot take this anymore.”
