Former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar Joins Roblox Board

Roblox has appointed former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar to its board of directors, effective September 13. The move underscores the gaming platform’s strategic ambition to transition into a comprehensive entertainment ecosystem as it seeks to capture an older demographic.

Kilar brings over 15 years of executive experience in media and entertainment to the company. His resume includes serving as CEO of WarnerMedia, co-founding and leading the subscription video service Hulu, and holding a board position at DreamWorks Animation. He currently serves on the boards of Wealthfront Inc. and Opendoor Technologies Inc.

Strategic Shift Toward General Entertainment

The appointment comes as Roblox experiences a significant shift in its user base. With 66 million daily active users, the platform reported that individuals aged 17 and older accounted for approximately 40% of its daily engagement last year. To accommodate this growth, the company is diversifying its content offerings:

  • Introduction of more mature themes, including violence, romance, and depictions of alcohol or gambling.
  • Development of avatar-based voice calls to enhance social interaction.
  • Integration of generative AI tools that allow users to create clothing and avatars via text prompts.
  • Expansion into virtual reality, with the Meta Quest app recently surpassing 1 million downloads.

Roblox CEO David Baszucki highlighted the value of Kilar’s background, stating, “Jason Kilar is a well-respected leader in the entertainment and media industry, and his experience in the space is of value to the Board as Roblox continues to scale globally.”

Vision for the Future

Kilar joins a board that includes David Baszucki, lead independent director Anthony P. Lee, and members Gregory Baszucki, Christopher Carvalho, Gina Mastantuono, and Andrea Wong. Regarding his new role, Kilar noted, “Roblox is changing the way people come together and changing how creators can create delightful experiences for them.”

The executive, who holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Harvard Business School, received public support following the announcement, including a congratulatory message from Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who described the appointment as a “great combo.”

As Roblox moves away from its reputation for strictly kid-friendly games—such as those focused on building theme parks or adopting pets—Kilar’s expertise will be tasked with navigating the complexities of managing a platform that spans multiple age demographics and entertainment formats.
