Google AI Mode Gains Personal Intelligence for Gmail and Photos

Google is expanding the capabilities of its conversational Search feature, AI Mode, by integrating “Personal Intelligence.” This update allows the system to pull relevant information directly from a user’s Gmail and Google Photos to deliver highly customized search results.

The feature is currently rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers using the English language in the United States. This move is part of a broader strategy to utilize the company’s extensive ecosystem—which includes data from YouTube history, Search, and other core services—to create a more cohesive AI experience.

How Personal Intelligence Works

By leveraging user-specific data, the AI can move beyond generic search results. For example, when planning a trip, the system can reference hotel confirmations found in Gmail and past photo locations to build a custom itinerary that aligns with the user’s documented preferences.

“With Personal Intelligence, recommendations don’t just match your interests — they fit seamlessly into your life,” said Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, in a blog post. “You don’t have to constantly explain your preferences or existing plans, it selects recommendations just for you, right from the start.”

Practical Applications

Google highlights several ways this integration assists in daily tasks:

  • Travel planning: Combining flight details with past travel history to suggest activities.
  • Shopping assistance: Identifying clothing needs based on destination weather (found in Gmail) and preferred brand styles.
  • Personalized events: Creating scavenger hunts or decor themes based on specific user-provided names and details.

Stein emphasized that the tool functions similarly to a personal shopper who is already familiar with the user’s upcoming itinerary and aesthetic preferences.

Privacy and Control

Because the feature involves access to sensitive personal data, Google has implemented an opt-in model, allowing users to toggle Personal Intelligence on or off at their discretion. Furthermore, the company clarified that AI Mode does not use the contents of a user’s Gmail inbox or Google Photos library to train its underlying models; instead, it utilizes information from specific prompts and the subsequent responses generated during the interaction.
