Google Gemini Gains Ground as ChatGPT Growth Slows
Google’s Gemini is rapidly closing the gap with market leader ChatGPT, according to fresh insights from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. While OpenAI’s chatbot still commands a significant portion of the landscape—holding 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of active users—its momentum is beginning to plateau.
The latest metrics reveal that Gemini is currently outperforming ChatGPT in three key areas: download velocity, the growth rate of monthly active users, and time spent within the application. This shift comes as OpenAI navigates a period of intense pressure, underscored by CEO Sam Altman’s recent “code red” memo, which urged staff to prioritize reliability, personalization, and image generation capabilities.

Market Saturation and Strategic Advantages
Sensor Tower suggests that ChatGPT may be approaching a point of market saturation. Between August and November 2025, its global monthly active users grew by only 6%, reaching approximately 810 million. In contrast, Google Gemini saw a 30% jump in users during that same period, bolstered largely by the introduction of its “Nano Banana” image generation model.
Google is also leveraging the ubiquity of the Android operating system. Data indicates that U.S. Android users are twice as likely to engage with Gemini directly through the OS rather than the standalone mobile app. This integration provides a significant distribution advantage over competitors restricted to app or web-based interfaces.
Growth Trends Across the Sector
The competitive landscape is becoming increasingly crowded. Other platforms are also recording triple-digit growth, challenging the dominance of established players:
- Perplexity: Up 370% year-over-year.
- Claude: Up 190% year-over-year.
- Gemini: Up 170% in monthly active users year-over-year.
- ChatGPT: Up 180% in monthly active users year-over-year.

User Engagement Metrics
Engagement depth also tells a shifting story. Gemini users are spending significantly more time in-app—reaching an average of 11 minutes per day as of November, a 120% increase since March. Meanwhile, daily time spent on ChatGPT saw only a 6% increase in the same window, with a 10% decline noted in November compared to July levels.
While the data points toward a narrowing gap, the race remains fluid. OpenAI’s future growth may hinge on its ability to launch new product iterations that resonate with users as effectively as Google’s recent updates have.
