Meta Acquires AI Wearable Startup Limitless
Meta has officially acquired Limitless, the artificial intelligence startup previously recognized as Rewind. The move signals a strategic shift for the startup, which rose to prominence by developing an AI-powered pendant designed to record and transcribe user conversations.

Following the acquisition, Limitless confirmed it will cease all hardware sales. Existing customers will retain support for the next year, and the company is transitioning current users to an “Unlimited Plan” at no additional cost. Furthermore, the startup plans to wind down its non-pendant software, “Rewind,” which functioned as a searchable record of desktop user activity.
Strategic Shift to Reality Labs
Founded by Brett Bejcek and Dan Siroker—the latter being a co-founder and former CEO of Optimizely—the startup pivoted last year to focus on the $99 wearable pendant. The device was designed to clip onto clothing or be worn as a necklace, positioning itself in a competitive market alongside other AI hardware like the Friend pendant.
Meta confirmed the integration of the team into its Reality Labs wearables organization. In an email statement, the tech giant noted: “We’re excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables.”
Market Challenges and Future Goals
The acquisition highlights the difficulties smaller hardware players face as tech giants like Meta and OpenAI accelerate their own internal hardware development. According to the company’s website, Limitless identified with Meta’s broader mission to “bring personal superintelligence to everyone.”
Reflecting on the industry’s evolution, Siroker shared his perspective on the journey:
- Five years ago, AI was viewed as a “pipe dream” and hardware startups were considered “unfundable.”
- Today, the integration of AI and hardware has moved from a “weird fringe idea” to an industry standard.
- The startup previously secured over $33 million in funding from prominent investors, including a16z, First Round Capital, and NEA.
