Google Launches Pics: A New AI Design Tool for Workspace

Google officially entered the competitive landscape of AI-driven design on Tuesday during its annual I/O event. The company introduced “Pics,” an image-generation and graphic design application integrated directly into Google Workspace, designed to simplify visual content creation for everyone from educators to small business owners.

Google just declared itself a contender in AI design at IO 2026

The platform allows users to produce marketing materials, social media graphics, mock-ups, and invitations through simple text prompts. By removing the technical barrier of requiring professional editing software, Google is positioning Pics as a direct rival to established platforms like Canva and AI-native competitors such as Anthropic’s Claude Design.

Refining AI-Generated Visuals

One of the primary challenges with current generative AI is the difficulty of modifying specific details without regenerating the entire image. Google aims to solve this limitation by focusing on granular editability:

  • Gemini Integration: The editing layer is powered by Gemini, allowing users to adjust specific elements within a design.
  • Comment-Based Editing: Users can select a specific part of an image and leave a comment to request changes, mirroring the feedback workflow found in Google Docs.
  • Manual Control: Beyond prompts and comments, users can manually edit text or elements directly, such as updating the time on an invitation card without re-prompting the AI.

Technology and Accessibility

Under the hood, Pics is powered by Nano Banana 2. According to Google, this model was chosen for its proficiency in real-world knowledge, detailed visual output, and, notably, its ability to handle precise text rendering within images. Because the tool is built natively into Google Workspace, it supports seamless visual collaboration, allowing users to share, print, or hand off designs for final adjustments by team members.

The app is currently available to a select group of testers at I/O. A broader rollout is scheduled for this summer, specifically for Google AI Ultra subscribers.
