YouTube Launches ‘Ask YouTube’ AI Search and Gemini for Shorts

YouTube is transforming its search functionality by integrating generative AI, allowing users to move beyond simple keyword entry. The platform has officially introduced “Ask YouTube,” a new feature designed to handle complex, conversational queries that draw from both long-form videos and Shorts to provide comprehensive answers.

This update is currently available to Premium subscribers in the United States using the desktop interface. Users can access the tool through the platform’s experimental features page, which serves as a testing ground for new AI-powered integrations.

Conversational Search and Gemini Integration

The “Ask YouTube” feature is designed to handle multifaceted inquiries. Instead of searching for singular terms, users can request specific guidance, such as tutorials on teaching a child a skill or locating niche reviews for entertainment. The system supports follow-up questions, allowing users to iterate on their search results dynamically.

Beyond search, Google is embedding its Gemini Omni AI model into the YouTube ecosystem. This integration extends to two specific areas:

• Shorts Remix: Enhances the creative process by allowing users to build upon existing content.
• YouTube Create: Provides tools that utilize the model to better interpret user intent, resulting in more cohesive video and audio editing.

Protections Against Deepfakes

Alongside these creative tools, YouTube is scaling its likeness-detection tool. The feature is now available to creators aged 18 and older, offering a mechanism to combat unauthorized AI-generated content.

If creators identify instances where their likeness has been used in a misleading AI video, they are permitted to request the removal of that content. While the expansion of this tool is a significant step for platform safety, its actual efficacy in curbing deepfakes remains a point of observation for the industry.
