Google Unveils Gemini-Powered Googlebook Laptops and AI Tools

Google previewed a significant expansion of its AI ecosystem during the virtual Android Show: I/O Edition event this Tuesday. The announcements spanned new hardware, deeper Gemini integration across mobile and desktop platforms, and updated security measures for Android users worldwide.

Googlebook: A New Laptop Category

The most notable hardware reveal was the “Googlebook,” a new laptop line built with Gemini Intelligence at its core. Scheduled for a fall release, these devices are designed to provide proactive, personalized assistance. Google is collaborating with major manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to offer various form factors.

Key features of the Googlebook include:

• Magic Pointer: A cursor integration powered by Gemini.
• Android Integration: Seamless ability to run phone applications directly on the laptop.
• Custom Widgets: Advanced personalization options for the user interface.

Agentic AI and Productivity

Google is pushing Gemini toward “agentic” capabilities, allowing the assistant to perform multi-step tasks across different applications. For example, users can photograph an event flyer and command the AI to locate that event on travel sites like Expedia, or use an on-screen grocery list to automatically build a shopping cart in a preferred app.

Additionally, Gemini is coming to the Chrome browser on Android, enabling webpage summarization and the ability to navigate sites and complete tasks, such as ticket booking, on behalf of the user.

Enhanced Personalization and Interaction

A new “Create My Widget” feature will arrive this summer for Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices. Using natural language, users can request custom widgets—such as a weekly meal-prep dashboard—that can be placed and resized on the home screen.

Additionally, Gboard is introducing “Rambler,” a dictation tool that automatically cleans up speech by removing filler words like “ums” and “ahs,” while intelligently correcting stated information (e.g., changing “3 p.m…. um, 2 p.m.” to a final “2 p.m.”).

Android Auto and Security Upgrades

Android Auto is receiving a significant interface refresh, including an edge-to-edge display experience and enhanced personalization. Gemini is now rolling out broadly to the platform, allowing for hands-free brainstorming and information gathering. Furthermore, users will soon be able to place food orders directly via the dash, starting with DoorDash integration.

In terms of security, Google is expanding its “default-on” theft protections globally. New Android 17 devices, as well as factory-reset units, will automatically enable features like Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock. These protections are also being extended to devices running Android 10 and higher in select international markets, including the U.K., Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina.

Visual and Creator Updates

Rounding out the updates, Google is refining all 4,000 Android emojis for a more expressive, 3D look. For creators, a new “Screen Reactions” feature—similar to formats found on TikTok and Instagram—will allow users to record themselves and their screens simultaneously, debuting first on Pixel devices this summer.
