CONTEUDO:

Instagram is pivoting its living room strategy, signaling a direct challenge to established streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The social media platform is actively testing new formats for its TV application, moving beyond short-form mobile clips to embrace long-form content, episodic series, and live broadcasts.

This shift represents a significant expansion for the Meta-owned network, which launched its dedicated TV experience last year. The move follows recent internal developments, including the testing of a “Series” feature for Reels on both Instagram and Facebook, designed to simplify how viewers track serialized content.

New Features for the Living Room

To support this push into home entertainment, Instagram is rolling out its TV app to Samsung devices, adding to existing support for Amazon Fire and Google TV. The interface is receiving substantial functional updates designed to improve the viewing experience:

  • Curated Channels: The app now features channels tailored to specific interests and creators, facilitating group viewing for sports, comedy, and other niches.
  • Horizontal Support: A dedicated section for horizontal videos is being tested, providing a more natural fit for television screens.
  • Enhanced Casting: Users can now cast Reels and content saved on their mobile devices directly to their television.
  • Story Integration: The TV application now includes support for watching other users’ Stories, an expansion from its previous focus solely on Reels.

By prioritizing horizontal formats and collaborative viewing tools, the company aims to move beyond its traditional role as a mobile-first app, capturing a larger share of time spent in front of the television.
