Meta Appoints Kunal Shah as WhatsApp Head in $900M CRED Deal
Meta is shifting its leadership strategy for WhatsApp, appointing Indian fintech entrepreneur Kunal Shah to head the messaging platform. Shah replaces Will Cathcart, who concludes a seven-year tenure to transition into a new product-focused role within the company.

This organizational change aligns with a $900 million investment led by Meta into CRED. The financing deal, involving both primary and secondary share purchases, grants Meta a minority stake in the Indian fintech company. Following the investment, which values CRED at approximately $4.5 billion on a post-money basis, Shah will vacate his position as CEO but will maintain his personal equity in the startup.
Strategic Focus on India
The decision to bring in Shah highlights India’s critical importance to Meta’s long-term vision. With over 500 million users, India represents the largest market for WhatsApp, which serves a total global user base exceeding 3 billion people. Meta aims to leverage Shah’s expertise in consumer internet growth to accelerate WhatsApp’s expansion into business messaging and digital payments.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, expressed confidence in the appointment, noting that Shah possesses the “builder mentality and global perspective” required to oversee the platform. He cited Shah’s success in establishing CRED as one of India’s primary technology firms as evidence of his capability to lead the messaging giant.
Leadership and Market Context
Will Cathcart has guided WhatsApp since 2019, overseeing the introduction of features such as Channels, Communities, and various AI-driven integrations. While he helped the service capture over 100 million users in the United States and deepen its business messaging footprint, the platform has faced challenges in the payments sector. Despite the growth of WhatsApp Pay in India, it has struggled to match the market penetration of local competitors like Google Pay and PhonePe.
The transition at CRED is also underway, with Miten Sampat, who has led the company’s finance and strategy since 2020, stepping in as interim CEO. The company, which counts 17 million monthly active users, is currently finalizing its long-term management strategy as it prepares for a potential initial public offering.
