Intel Targets Handheld Gaming Market With New Dedicated Chip

Intel is making a strategic push into the portable gaming sector, announcing the development of a dedicated hardware and software platform designed specifically for handheld devices. The initiative centers on a specialized version of the company’s Intel Core Series 3 processors, known as Panther Lake.

Intel is building a handheld gaming platform including a dedicated chip

Daniel Rogers, Intel’s vice president and general manager of PC products, confirmed the move during the company’s appearance at CES on Monday. By leveraging the Panther Lake architecture—which debuted last year and is currently integrating into the broader PC market—Intel aims to provide a tailored silicon solution for the growing category of mobile gaming PCs.

Advanced Manufacturing and Market Strategy

The upcoming handheld platform will utilize Intel’s 18A manufacturing process. This process, which officially entered production in 2025, serves as the foundation for the Panther Lake series. The development of a chip specifically for handhelds, first reported by IGN, marks a significant shift in how the company approaches mobile gaming form factors.

Intel’s history in the gaming space spans decades, dating back to its foundational work on PC processors in the 1990s. The company further expanded its gaming footprint in 2022 with the launch of its Intel Arc GPUs.

Competition in the Portable Space

Intel’s entry into this segment places it in direct competition with AMD, which currently holds a dominant position in the handheld gaming market. The competitive landscape remains intense, as evidenced by AMD’s own announcements at CES on Monday, which included the reveal of the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor and new graphics technologies focused on ray tracing.

Key takeaways from the announcement include:

  • Core Architecture: The platform will be powered by Panther Lake (Intel Core Series 3).
  • Manufacturing: The chips utilize the 18A process node.
  • Timeline: Additional technical specifications and product details are expected to be unveiled later this year.

While the hardware is currently in development, Rogers indicated that the company plans to provide a more comprehensive update on its handheld gaming roadmap in the coming months.
