Roblox Makes Facial Verification Mandatory for Chat Access
Roblox is implementing a global mandate requiring users to verify their age if they wish to utilize the platform’s communication features. The move comes as the company faces mounting legal pressure and intense scrutiny regarding the protection of minors on its service.

How the Verification Process Works
To verify their age, users must access the Roblox application and provide camera permissions to undergo a facial verification scan. The company states that it partners with a third-party vendor, Persona, to process these checks. According to Roblox, both the platform and the vendor delete all images and video data immediately after the verification is completed.
While facial scanning is the primary method, users aged 13 and older have the option to verify their identity using official identification documents instead. The company clarified that while using Roblox itself does not require verification, access to social and chat features is now strictly gated behind this process.
Safety and Age-Based Chat Restrictions
Once a user is verified, they are placed into specific age brackets to facilitate “age-appropriate” interactions. These segments include:
- Under 9
- 9 to 12
- 13 to 15
- 16 to 17
- 18 to 20
- 21 and older
Users can only communicate with individuals in their own bracket and the groups immediately adjacent to them. Furthermore, chat remains disabled by default for children under the age of 9 unless a parent explicitly provides consent following the verification step.
Context of Legal Challenges
This policy shift follows high-profile lawsuits and investigations, including legal actions initiated by attorneys general in Texas and Louisiana. Critics and regulators have raised alarms regarding the platform’s exposure of minors to risks such as grooming and explicit content. In a recent blog post, the company acknowledged that it is leveraging multiple signals to monitor behavior and may require users to re-verify their age if their activity suggests they fall outside their stated age group.
For users who believe their age was incorrectly estimated during the process, Roblox offers an appeals route that allows for alternative identity verification or the use of parental control tools to update the account information.
