Spotify Expands Video Podcast Monetization Access

Spotify is significantly reducing the entry barriers for creators to monetize video content on its platform. The streaming giant announced a major overhaul of its partner program eligibility criteria, aiming to attract a broader range of podcasters to its video ecosystem.

Spotify lowers monetization threshold for video podcasts

Updated Eligibility Requirements

The new standards represent a sharp decrease from the original requirements established during the program’s launch last year. To qualify for monetization, creators now need to meet the following thresholds:

  • Episode Count: Minimum of 3 episodes (previously 12).
  • Consumption: 2,000 hours of viewing time in the last 30 days (previously 10,000).
  • Audience: 1,000 engaged viewers over the past 30 days (previously 2,000).

Under this program, podcasters earn revenue based on video engagement from premium subscribers, as well as a portion of advertising income generated from listeners on the platform’s free tier.

New Tools and API Integration

In a direct move to challenge YouTube’s dominance in video consumption, Spotify is introducing a new API designed to streamline the publishing process. This integration allows creators to distribute and monetize video podcasts directly through third-party platforms. Launch partners for this initiative include Acast, Audioboom, Libsyn, Omny, and Podigee.

Additionally, Spotify is enhancing its creator-focused software suite. New sponsorship tools, which allow hosts to schedule, update, and track host-read ad spots, will arrive in the Spotify for Creators app and the Megaphone hosting platform this April.

Infrastructure and Growth Strategy

The company continues to invest in physical infrastructure to support this shift. Spotify is opening a new recording studio in West Hollywood, which will serve as a hub for The Ringer podcast network and host select creators from the partner program. This facility joins existing studio spaces in Los Angeles’ arts district, New York, Stockholm, and London.

These strategic adjustments follow a period of growth for the platform’s video segment. Spotify reports that since the partner program’s inception, video podcast consumption has nearly doubled. Data indicates that the average user now streams twice as many video shows per month compared to the pre-launch period, though some market analysts suggest this increase may be tied to the platform’s aggressive promotion of video content in user feeds.
