iOS 27: Apple integrates AI across iPhone apps and services
While the overhaul of Siri stole the spotlight at Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference, the company’s broader artificial intelligence strategy is quietly reshaping the iPhone experience. With iOS 27, Apple is embedding AI directly into everyday apps, prioritizing utility over simple chatbot interactions.
The goal is to solve practical, manual tasks—such as managing finances, securing credentials, and organizing digital clutter—without requiring users to adopt a new interface. These features are currently accessible in the developer beta and will roll out to the public later this fall.
Streamlined bill splitting
Managing shared expenses becomes significantly easier with new Apple Intelligence capabilities. By capturing an image of a restaurant receipt, the system automatically parses itemized costs, taxes, and tips.
Users can select specific items to pay for and share payment requests directly via Messages. The process integrates with Apple Cash, allowing for seamless settlement of debts.
Proactive security
Apple is evolving its password management tools to counter the growing threat of data breaches. Instead of merely storing complex passwords, iOS 27 will use AI to actively monitor for compromised credentials.
The system is designed to act on the user’s behalf, navigating websites to automatically update weak passwords to more secure versions.
Contextual intelligence in Messages
The Messages app will now leverage contextual awareness to offer one-tap suggestions based on conversation content.
- Reminders: If a contact requests an item, the app may suggest adding it to your to-do list.
- Photo Sharing: AI can identify specific events or people in your library to suggest relevant images.
- Scheduling: Conversation topics regarding meetings or dinners will trigger prompts to add events directly to your Calendar.
Call context
To reduce friction in customer service interactions, a new “Call Context” feature will surface pertinent information, such as reservation confirmation codes, directly on the screen when a call is initiated.
This information is pulled from the Mail app and processed entirely on-device to maintain privacy.
Simplifying automation
The Shortcuts app, historically a tool for power users, is becoming more accessible. In iOS 27, users can configure automations using natural language descriptions. Whether it’s adjusting alarms based on calendar entries or automating smart home triggers, the system aims to lower the barrier for creating complex workflows.
Refining Home app notifications
The Home app is also receiving a smart update to reduce notification fatigue. Instead of sending alerts for every individual event in a sequence, the system will consolidate related actions into a single summary notification.
Safari tab management
Finally, Safari will include an AI-powered tab organizer. The browser can now analyze open pages and group them by topic, such as travel research, making it easier to manage large sets of active tabs without manual intervention.
