iOS 27 Will Let Users Choose Their Own AI Models
iPhone users are set to gain unprecedented control over their device’s artificial intelligence capabilities later this year. With the upcoming release of iOS 27, Apple is moving toward a modular strategy that allows users to select which third-party large language models power their operating system’s core functions.

The “Extensions” Strategy
Internal test versions of the software reveal a new feature referred to as “Extensions.” This functionality is designed to integrate generative AI directly into the iPhone experience, enabling users to trigger specific capabilities from installed apps on demand.
According to a report by Bloomberg, these AI tools will interface with existing Apple Intelligence features, including:
- Siri voice commands
- Writing Tools for text generation and editing
- Image Playground for creative tasks
Cross-Platform Availability and Model Integration
This shift in strategy will not be limited to the iPhone. The company intends to roll out these AI model choices across iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 as well. While the specific lineup of supported providers remains in flux, testing is currently underway for models developed by Google and Anthropic.
The status of ChatGPT remains a point of interest; given its current integration, it is expected to remain a primary option for users as the ecosystem expands to include more third-party competitors.
A Strategic Pivot Under New Leadership
The move comes at a pivotal time for the tech giant. As long-time CEO Tim Cook prepares to step down, incoming executive John Ternus is stepping into a role defined by the company’s long-term AI trajectory. Apple has been widely perceived by industry analysts as trailing behind peers in the rapid deployment of new AI services.
Rather than focusing on the massive capital expenditure required to build out proprietary AI infrastructure from scratch, Apple is leaning into its existing hardware ecosystem. The goal is to transform the iPhone, iPad, and Mac into a flexible hub for AI-centric experiences, prioritizing user choice and platform integration over singular model reliance.
