MacBook Neo: Apple launches $599 laptop to rival Chromebooks

Apple is officially entering the entry-level laptop market with the MacBook Neo, a new device designed to compete directly with Chromebooks. Starting at $599, the machine marks a strategic shift for the company, targeting students and casual users who prioritize portability and everyday performance over heavy-duty professional tasks like 3D rendering or video editing.

Hardware and Performance

To achieve this price point, Apple opted for the A18 Pro chip—the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro series—rather than the more expensive M-series silicon used in the MacBook Air lineup. Despite the shift in architecture, the company claims significant efficiency gains for daily tasks.

According to Apple, the MacBook Neo delivers:

  • Up to 50% faster speeds for common activities like web browsing compared to leading PCs using Intel Core Ultra 5 processors.
  • Up to 3x faster performance for on-device AI workloads, such as applying complex photo effects.
  • Fan-less operation, ensuring the device remains completely silent during use.

Design and Technical Specifications

The 13-inch laptop is available in four distinct colors: silver, blush, citrus, and indigo. The base model features 256GB of storage, while a $699 configuration increases storage to 512GB and adds Touch ID authentication.

Additional hardware features include:

  • A 1080p FaceTime HD camera.
  • Dual microphones and speakers capable of Spatial Audio.
  • Two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Battery life rated for up to 16 hours on a single charge.

Internally, the device utilizes a 5-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, mirroring the AI and gaming capabilities currently found in high-end iPhone models. As rising RAM costs have driven up the prices of the MacBook Pro line by as much as $400, the MacBook Neo arrives as a more accessible alternative for those seeking the Apple ecosystem without the professional-grade price tag.
