MacBook Pro and Air Prices Climb Amid Global RAM Shortage
Apple has refreshed its laptop lineup with the debut of new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, the latter featuring the powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max silicon. However, the hardware upgrades arrive alongside significant price increases across the board, with some models costing as much as $400 more than their predecessors.
The Cost of M5 Performance
The new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips arrive with impressive specifications, including an 18-core CPU and a 4x increase in peak GPU compute power for AI tasks. Despite these technical leaps, the sticker prices reflect a challenging supply chain environment:
- 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro): Starts at $2,199 (up from $1,999).
- 16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro): Starts at $2,699 (up from $2,499).
- 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max): Starts at $3,599 (up from $3,199).
- 16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max): Starts at $3,899 (up from $3,499).
The price adjustments also extend to the MacBook Air range. Both the 13-inch and 15-inch models have seen a $100 increase, now starting at $1,099 and $1,299, respectively.
Supply Chain Pressures
The primary driver behind these increased costs is a constrained global supply of RAM. As the demand for AI-capable data centers and high-performance computing hardware grows, memory component costs have begun to surge.
Industry analysts suggest that Apple’s pricing strategy may serve as an early indicator of wider market shifts. With memory shortages expected to impact consumer electronics across the board, reports already indicate that smartphone shipments may decline significantly throughout the year as manufacturers struggle to absorb these rising component costs.
