The feature, currently referred to internally as “Name Tag,” is designed to enable users to identify individuals and access information about them via the company’s integrated AI assistant, according to a report from The New York Times.

The development of Name Tag follows years of deliberation regarding the significant privacy and safety implications inherent in such technology. While the project is currently in the works, sources indicate that Meta’s strategy remains fluid and subject to change.
Strategic Timing and Internal Deliberations
Internal documentation suggests that Meta previously considered an initial launch of the feature tailored for attendees of a conference for the visually impaired, though that plan was ultimately abandoned. The company has since evaluated the optimal timing for a broader release, viewing the current political climate in the United States as a strategic window.
An internal memo highlighted the company’s perspective on the current environment:
