Minecraft Gets Real-World Theme Park Attractions

The blocky digital landscapes of Minecraft are set to transition into physical reality. Microsoft has officially partnered with Merlin Entertainments to develop a series of location-based attractions, marking a significant expansion for the world’s best-selling video game franchise.

Minecraft is entering the real world

A Massive Investment in Immersive Experiences

The collaboration involves a capital commitment exceeding $110 million for the initial phase of the project. According to plans shared by Merlin Entertainments, the development will focus on two major attractions slated for launch within the next two years. These sites are expected to be located in either existing theme parks or dedicated city-center venues across the United Kingdom and the United States.

The expansion will feature a mix of offerings designed to bring the game’s mechanics to life, including:

  • Immersive theme park rides
  • Dedicated retail outlets
  • Themed hotel accommodations

Scaling a Global Gaming Phenomenon

This initiative leverages the massive reach of Minecraft, which currently boasts 140 million monthly active players. The title solidified its status as a cultural juggernaut last year, becoming the first individual game to surpass 300 million units sold, comfortably outpacing industry rivals such as Grand Theft Auto V, Wii Sports, and PUBG: Battlegrounds.

Regarding the division of labor for the project, a vice president of franchise development at Minecraft noted that the collaboration relies on the specific strengths of both entities: “Mojang and Microsoft are experts on Minecraft and the brand, Merlin are the experts on location-based experiences; [the attractions are] a shared vision.”
