Netflix Launches TED Tumblewords: Another Daily Puzzle Game

Netflix is expanding its gaming catalog with the release of TED Tumblewords, a collaboration with the nonprofit media organization TED. The title, which functions as a daily word puzzle, is now available to download on iOS and Android devices for Netflix subscribers, while also being accessible for free at TED.com/games.
Gameplay Mechanics and Modes
The core objective of Tumblewords involves sliding rows of scrambled letters on a three-by-three grid. Players must form the longest words possible to accumulate points, with each letter tile carrying a distinct value, similar to Scrabble. Bonus points are awarded for starting words with specific letters, though participants are limited to a maximum of six board shuffles per game.
The title offers three distinct ways to play:
- Daily Six: A challenge to form six words while attempting to break personal high scores.
- Daily Ladder: A five-level progression system that requires hitting specific point thresholds.
- Daily Match: A competitive mode against a TED-provided bot, or against friends and strangers in turn-based online play.
Market Context and Features
The mobile word puzzle market remains highly saturated, with Tumblewords entering a space occupied by established titles like Word Cookies, Words With Friends, and the widely popular Wordle. Like Wordle, Netflix’s latest entry incorporates a streak feature to incentivize daily retention and allows users to share results on social media.
While the mechanics draw parallels to existing games, Tumblewords distinguishes itself through the integration of “Knowledge Cards.” As players progress, they unlock these digital collectibles, which provide educational facts across categories such as literature, health, business, and the arts. Completing these collections grants players exclusive badges.
Netflix’s Gaming Strategy
Tumblewords joins Word Trails in the streaming giant’s collection of word-based titles. This release is part of a broader push to diversify the Netflix gaming library. The company has already confirmed several upcoming games, including Monument Valley 3, The Ultimatum: Choices, and Netflix Stories: Outer Banks. Additionally, a title based on the hit series Squid Game is currently in active development.
