MPA Issues Cease-and-Desist to Meta Over ‘PG-13’ Labeling

Moderation

CONTEUDO:

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has formally challenged Meta over its recent decision to apply “PG-13” ratings to content viewed by teenagers on Instagram. The film trade group issued a cease-and-desist letter, arguing that the social media giant’s terminology is deceptive and risks damaging the reputation of the long-standing film classification system.

Motion Picture Association hits Meta with cease-and-desist over use of ‘PG-13’ label

A Conflict of Standards

The dispute centers on a policy update Meta introduced last month, which restricted teen accounts to content aligned with PG-13 standards. The MPA, which first raised the issue shortly after the announcement, contends that Meta’s implementation is fundamentally flawed.

In its legal correspondence, the association highlighted several core grievances regarding the misuse of its intellectual property:

  • Inaccurate Representation: The MPA asserts that Meta’s claim is “literally false and highly misleading.”
  • System Discrepancies: The trade group emphasized that its own rating system cannot be equated to Meta’s automated, AI-driven content restrictions.
  • Brand Integrity: The association fears that public frustration with Meta’s AI moderation will lead users to question the credibility of the official MPA ratings.

Meta’s Defense

Meta has pushed back against the allegations, maintaining that its terminology does not imply an official certification or partnership with the film industry body. The company clarified that its content moderation guidelines are merely “guided” by PG-13 principles rather than being a direct extension of the MPA’s framework.

“The MPA has worked for decades to earn the public’s trust in its rating system,” the association stated in its letter, noting that confusion between the two systems is inevitable if the current labeling persists. Despite this, Meta representatives maintain that their use of the term falls under the legal protections of fair use, signaling a potential standoff between the tech platform and the film industry over the governance of digital content standards.
