Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Firm InterPositive

Netflix confirmed on Thursday the acquisition of InterPositive, a specialized filmmaking technology firm established in 2022 by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck. The deal, for which financial terms remain undisclosed, marks a significant push by the streaming giant to integrate generative AI tools into its production pipeline.

Focus on Post-Production Efficiency

Unlike competitors exploring synthetic performances or AI-generated actors, InterPositive focuses on streamlining post-production workflows. The company developed a model capable of analyzing visual logic and maintaining editorial consistency across film projects. These tools assist production teams in solving common technical hurdles, such as:

  • Correcting continuity errors in footage.
  • Adjusting or enhancing environmental lighting.
  • Managing background replacements and filling in missing shots.

The Role of Human Creativity

Affleck, who will transition into a role as a senior adviser at Netflix, emphasized that the technology was built with strict guardrails to prioritize human judgment. “We also built in restraints to protect creative intent, so the tools are designed for responsible exploration while keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists,” Affleck stated regarding the company’s development philosophy.

The founder noted that his interest in the intersection of technology and cinema began in 2022, driven by a desire to “preserve what makes human storytelling human.” By automating technical fixes, the platform aims to ensure that the advantages of machine learning directly support the specific vision of the filmmaker rather than overriding it.

Netflix’s AI Strategy

The acquisition aligns with the broader strategy Netflix has communicated to its investors regarding its readiness to leverage advancements in artificial intelligence. The company has already experimented with generative AI for special effects in various original productions.

Elizabeth Stone, chief product and technology officer at Netflix, characterized the partnership as a commitment to the creative community. “The InterPositive team is joining Netflix because of our shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them,” Stone said. The move positions Netflix to further refine its post-production capabilities as it continues to scale its global content library.
