Netflix Launches Game Controller App for TV Gaming
Netflix has taken a significant step toward expanding its gaming footprint beyond mobile devices. The streaming giant quietly released a new application called “Netflix Game Controller” on the Apple App Store, designed to turn smartphones into controllers for games played directly on television sets.

While the app is now available for download, Netflix has remained tight-lipped regarding specific timelines or which titles will be available for TV play. The app’s official description offers only a brief “Coming soon to Netflix” teaser, and the company declined to provide further details when asked for comment.
Expanding Beyond Mobile
The move aligns with the company’s long-term vision to make gaming accessible across all devices. Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s VP of external games, stated in May that the firm intends to utilize cloud gaming to provide seamless access to titles on any screen, explicitly including television sets.
Since entering the gaming market in November 2021, Netflix has released more than 50 titles. The company’s internal pipeline remains robust, with:
- 40 games scheduled for release throughout this year.
- 16 titles currently in development at in-house studios.
- 70 additional games being produced through external partnerships.
A Different Approach to Cloud Gaming
Netflix executives have been careful to distinguish their strategy from traditional console competitors like Xbox or PlayStation. Mike Verdu, a key executive at the company, previously emphasized that the service is intended as a “value add” rather than a console replacement. He noted that the business model is “completely different,” focusing on a natural integration of gaming into the existing subscription experience.
Regarding the challenges of cloud gaming, Netflix maintains that previous market failures—such as Google’s Stadia—were the result of unsustainable business models rather than technological limitations. By bundling games into its existing streaming subscription, Netflix is attempting to sidestep the financial hurdles that hampered its predecessors.
Market Context
The release of the controller app arrives as Netflix continues to navigate the impact of its password-sharing crackdown. The company reported the addition of 5.9 million global subscribers in its most recent quarter, reaching a total of 238.4 million members. This expansion creates a larger potential user base for its cloud gaming ambitions.
For now, the Netflix Game Controller app is exclusive to iOS. Industry data firm data.ai has yet to integrate the new software into its rankings, reflecting its recent arrival on the platform.
