Krafton Pledges $150M to India’s Growing Gaming Sector
Krafton is doubling down on the Indian market, committing an additional $150 million to be deployed over the next two to three years. This capital infusion follows the South Korean gaming firm’s previous investment of roughly $140 million across 11 Indian startups since 2021, including companies like Nodwin Gaming, Loco, Pratilipi, and Kuku FM.

The company confirmed that these new funds will be directed toward gaming and entertainment startups. According to Krafton, its existing portfolio in the region has shown strong performance, with many firms successfully scaling revenues and securing subsequent funding rounds.
Strategic Commitment Amid Regulatory Shifts
The investment pledge arrives as Krafton navigates the final stages of a three-month trial period for its flagship mobile title, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). The game, a localized iteration of the previously banned PUBG, was granted permission to resume operations in May after a year-long hiatus.
To align with New Delhi’s national security requirements, Krafton implemented significant operational changes, such as:
- Severing ties with Tencent as its publishing partner.
- Migrating server infrastructure to Microsoft’s Azure within India.
While the trial approval is set to conclude in approximately two weeks, Krafton maintains that its investment strategy is independent of regulatory conditions. “We will continue to invest and support the local ecosystem regardless of any conditions imposed on us,” a company spokesperson stated.
Market Impact and Future Outlook
BGMI remains a critical asset for Krafton, serving as the cornerstone of India’s esports landscape. Data from the mobile intelligence firm SensorTower indicates that the title has reached 30 million monthly active users in less than three months since its relaunch, with Krafton reporting that the game has begun generating revenue.
Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India, expressed optimism regarding the country’s trajectory. “We believe in the power of Indian IPs and content in making a lasting global impact, and we are excited to achieve new milestones in our journey to unlock the country’s full potential as a global gaming powerhouse,” said Sohn.
For the South Korean giant, India represents a premier engine for global growth. The company’s long-term outlook remains focused on supporting the local startup ecosystem, acknowledging that factors such as market conditions and consumer sentiment are part of the broader landscape in which their partner companies operate.
