Peripheral Labs Uses Autonomous Tech to Transform Sports View

Peripheral Labs, a Canadian startup founded in 2024, is leveraging breakthroughs in autonomous vehicle technology to overhaul how audiences consume live sports. By applying robotics perception and 3D vision systems typically reserved for self-driving cars, the company aims to make immersive, volumetric video capture accessible to a wider range of leagues and broadcasters.

The core of the system is a 3D reconstruction platform that allows viewers to navigate live gameplay from virtually any angle. While volumetric video is not a new concept, the high cost of current infrastructure often limits its use. Peripheral Labs claims it can significantly reduce the technical burden, cutting the number of required cameras from over 100 to as few as 32.

Adapting Autonomous Tech for Athletics

The startup’s founders, Kelvin Cui and Mustafa Khan, bring substantial experience in robotics to the sports sector. Both were key members of the University of Toronto’s autonomous vehicle team. Khan previously conducted research at Huawei, while Cui worked on chassis systems as a software engineer at Tesla.

“Both Mustafa and I are huge sports fans,” Cui explained. “When Mustafa showed me his research about 3D reconstruction, my brain said it would be cool to watch hockey like this.”

By utilizing their background in machine learning and robotics, the team has developed a sensor stack that captures depth in a way similar to how autonomous vehicles interpret their surroundings. This approach enables several high-end features:

  • Player Tracking: Fans can isolate and follow individual athletes throughout a play.
  • Interactive Replays: Users can freeze live action to examine critical moments or fouls from different vantage points.
  • Biomechanical Analysis: The software monitors joint movements, including finger and knee flexion, providing coaches with detailed data on body positioning and flexibility.

Market Strategy and Investment

The company recently secured $3.6 million in a seed funding round led by Khosla Ventures, with additional backing from Daybreak Capital, Entrepreneurs First, and Transpose Platform. Joe Ros, a partner at Entrepreneurs First, emphasized that the startup transcends traditional sports-tech categories by positioning itself as an entertainment-focused play.

“The new standard for that consumption will be immersive, volumetric video,” Ros said. “The work they’re doing now in sports will give them the data, tech, and deployment moat to be the only person in the market able to enable this.”

Peripheral Labs currently employs 10 engineers and is focusing on scaling its hardware to function in environments ranging from small practice facilities to massive soccer and football stadiums. While the company has yet to disclose its official partners, it confirmed that it is currently in discussions with several professional teams and leagues across North America.

As the startup competes with established players like Arcturus Studios, its primary roadmap involves reducing system latency, improving 3D reconstruction resolution, and lowering hardware costs to secure multi-year contracts with broadcasters.
