Plex Unveils Social Features Amidst Lifetime Pass Price Hike

Plex is evolving beyond its roots as a personal media server, rolling out a suite of social networking tools designed to transform the platform into a community-driven streaming hub. The update, announced Wednesday, positions the service to compete directly with established hubs like Reddit and Letterboxd.

New Tools for Content Discovery

The core of this update focuses on how users interact with their media libraries and each other. Key additions include:

  • Discussions: A community forum where users can comment on specific movies and shows, managed by a hybrid moderation system using both AI and human oversight.
  • Lists: A feature for organizing, managing, and sharing curated collections. Users can react with emojis and, later this year, will be able to import lists from external services.
  • Match Score: A predictive tool that analyzes a user’s viewing habits to provide a percentage-based compatibility rating for new titles.

Scott Olechowski, co-founder and chief product officer at Plex, explained that the Match Score feature aims to remove the “guesswork” from choosing what to watch. “It looks at the things you watch and the way you rate them, and turns that into a simple percentage that tells you how closely a title lines up with what you tend to enjoy,” Olechowski told TechCrunch.

Strategic Shift Amidst Price Hikes

These social enhancements arrive as Plex faces a shifting entertainment landscape. With over 42 million monthly active users across 180 countries, the company is attempting to increase daily engagement to compete with the social-media-like features recently integrated by rivals like Netflix and Disney+.

However, the expansion of these features is occurring alongside a controversial financial adjustment. Starting July 1, the cost of a Lifetime Plex Pass will jump to $749.99. This follows a previous increase that moved the price from $119.99 to $249.99 just last year. You can find more details on the official price update here.

While Lists are available to the entire user base immediately, the Discussions forum is scheduled for release later this month. Additional social capabilities are expected to roll out throughout the remainder of the year as the company continues its push toward a more interconnected discovery experience.
