Roblox Rolls Out AI Chat Tool to Replace Banned Words

Roblox is rolling out a new artificial intelligence system designed to sanitize in-game communication by automatically rephrasing prohibited language in real-time. The update, announced Thursday, shifts the platform away from its traditional practice of obscuring banned terms with hashtags.

Previously, when a user sent a message containing restricted content, the platform’s filter would replace the entire phrase or specific words with “####,” often leaving players unable to follow the context of a conversation. Under the new protocol, the AI modifies the offensive input into respectful language that retains the user’s original intent. For example, a message like “Hurry TF up!” will now be automatically adjusted to “Hurry up!”

Maintaining Conversational Flow

To ensure transparency, the system notifies all participants in a chat session whenever a message has been modified. According to Rajiv Bhatia, vice president of User and Discovery Product at Roblox, the goal is to minimize friction while upholding community standards.

“Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,” Bhatia stated. “Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what’s appropriate.”

Enhanced Safety Measures

The company confirmed that the rephrasing feature is compatible with all languages currently supported by its automated translation tools. While this update aims to smooth out communication, Roblox clarified that its underlying safety infrastructure remains active to address more severe violations.

Alongside the rephrasing tool, the platform is bolstering its detection capabilities to identify sophisticated attempts at bypassing filters, including the use of leetspeak. These upgrades have reportedly improved detection accuracy, leading to a 20-fold reduction in false negatives regarding the sharing of personal information.

Broader Context of Platform Safety

This initiative follows a period of intense regulatory scrutiny for the gaming platform. Recently, Roblox implemented mandatory facial verification for chat access following a series of lawsuits filed by attorneys general from states including Kentucky, Texas, and Louisiana. Those legal challenges were prompted by concerns over the exposure of minors to explicit content and grooming risks.
