Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Prices in US Amid New Tariffs
Sony confirmed on Wednesday that it is increasing the retail price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States. The adjustments, which add approximately $50 to the cost of current hardware, take effect starting Thursday, August 21.
New Pricing Structure
The price hikes follow the White House’s July 31 announcement of a 15% tariff on goods imported from Japan. Sony attributed the decision to a “challenging economic environment,” a direct reference to the impact of these tariffs on imported electronics.
Under the new pricing model in the U.S., the consoles will now cost:
- PlayStation 5: $549.99
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: $499.99
- PlayStation 5 Pro: $749.99
Industry Impact and Global Scope
While the U.S. market remained stable during previous inflationary periods in 2022, this update brings American pricing in line with international adjustments. Sony previously raised console prices in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in April. At this time, the company stated there are no plans to increase costs for accessories or extend these specific price hikes to other global regions.
Sony is not the only gaming giant responding to the current trade climate. Microsoft previously signaled in May that it would implement price increases between $80 and $100 for its consoles, alongside higher costs for select software and hardware peripherals. Meanwhile, Nintendo has opted to adjust the pricing for specific accessories for the Switch 2, while keeping the base price of the console unchanged.
