Spotify Expands Into Physical Books With New Marketplace
Spotify is evolving beyond digital audio, announcing a strategic move into the physical book market. Starting this spring, users in the U.S. and U.K. will be able to purchase printed copies directly through the platform, signaling a major shift for the audio-first service as it seeks to become a comprehensive hub for readers.
The company has secured a partnership with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace dedicated to supporting independent bookstores. Under this agreement, Spotify will earn an affiliate fee for sales, while orders—including pricing, inventory management, and shipping—will be handled by Bookshop.org.

Bridging Print and Audio
To integrate these formats, Spotify is introducing “Page Match.” This feature utilizes computer vision technology to allow users to scan a page from a physical book or e-book using their smartphone camera. The app then analyzes the content to identify the exact location, allowing listeners to jump directly to that point in the corresponding audiobook.
Key details regarding these new features include:
- Page Match availability: Currently available for premium subscribers, it will roll out to all audiobook users by late February. It currently supports most English-language titles among the platform’s 500,000-plus catalog.
- Seamless transitions: Users can toggle between “Scan to Listen” and “Scan to Read” to maintain their progress across formats.
- Audiobook Recaps: Previously exclusive to iOS, this feature—which provides concise summaries of the last section listened to—will arrive on Android devices this spring.

Growth in the Audiobook Sector
The company’s expansion comes on the heels of significant growth in its audiobook segment. According to data reported last October, audiobook listening hours increased by 37% over the previous year, with the number of engaged listeners rising by 36%. Currently, more than half of the platform’s 281 million premium subscribers have interacted with its audiobook library.
These updates provide a new dimension to Spotify’s service as investors look toward the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report, scheduled for release on February 10.
